Veterans Day at Georgetown Honors Those Who Serve

Georgetown remembers and honors students, faculty and staff who served in the military with Veterans Day programs on Main Campus and at the Law Center.

Members of the Georgetown community gather on Copley Lawn for a Veterans Day ceremony honoring the 640 student veterans on campus and the many men and women beyond Georgetown who have served.

– Georgetown Commemorated Veterans Day with a ceremony honoring all those who have served in the United States military.

The Georgetown University Student Veterans Association (GUSVA) and The Hoya Battalion, Georgetown’s ROTC, presented the ceremony yesterday on the steps of White-Gravenor Hall.

Joel Meredith (G’17), GUSVA president; Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, Army Capabilities and Integration Center director and U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command deputy commanding general, futures; and Georgetown President John J. DeGioia delivered remarks during the ceremony.

“It’s a particular privilege to celebrate Veterans Day at an elite university that has both educated and been shaped by our nation’s veterans,” McMaster said. “Our military is a living historical community and those of us serving today are determined to preserve the legacy of courageous, selfless service that we have inherited from the veterans who’ve gone before us.”

DeGioia thanked McMaster for his leadership and service and shared his gratitude for the service Georgetown’s veterans have provided for their country.

“We gather as a community here at this moment to express the gratitude of our entire Georgetown family for the sacrifice and the service of our veterans [and] for the ways that you help to animate and live out the values of our university,” eGioia said.

The Georgetown University Law Center also hosted a Veterans Day program and reception to honor service members and Yellow Ribbon supporters.

Speakers at the Law Center program include Robert Kimmitt (L’77), senior international counsel at Wilmerhale; Nelson Jones III (L’77, ’80); Erin Stone (L’97), United States Naval Academy staff judge advocate; and Gordon Griffin (L’11, ’12), associate at Crowell and Moring LLP.
