Title: 10/13: Residence Hall Security Updates

TO: Residents of NewSouth and Southwest Quad
SENT: Wednesday, October 13, 2021

Dear Residents of New South and the Southwest Quad,

Over the past few weeks we have been working to address several incidents of intrusions of unauthorized individuals in New South and the Southwest Quad residence halls on weekend evenings.

We have taken a number of steps to address concerns and are implementing new efforts to help prevent future incidents:

  • Beginning this Friday, October 15, Student Guard posts will be activated in the entrances of New South, Kennedy, Reynolds and McCarthy. These trained Student Guards will be monitoring the residence hall entrances on Friday and Saturday evenings, checking GOCards and ensuring compliance with our building entrance policies.
  • GUPD and the Facilities Management team have assessed and confirmed the functioning and safety of residence hall perimeter doors and entrances.
  • For the time being and out of an abundance of caution, we have increased campus police patrols in the lobbies and near all residence halls.

We also ask that you play a role in helping to keep yourself, your peers and our campus community safe by following best practices on safety and security. Please pay particular attention to the issue of “tailgating”, where residents knowingly or unknowingly allow unauthorized individuals to pass through GOCard-accessed entrances with them or behind them.

Please contact GUPD at police@georgetown.edu with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Jay Gruber
Chief of Police and Associate Vice President for Public Safety
