Title: Dear Georgetown Freshman: Break the Comfort Zone

Dear Georgetown Freshman,

Congratulations, you’ve made it! The Hilltop is eager and excited to have you. I have to say, I am also a little jealous. The first year at Georgetown is unlike any other. Looking back on my own experiences from freshman year, my most valuable piece of advice is to not be afraid to break out of your comfort zone.

The best experiences in life begin at the end of your comfort zone, and I encourage you to begin that process freshman year. It will be completely worth it! Georgetown’s world-renowned professors are eager to make your learning experience the best; do not be afraid to introduce yourself during office hours. The Hilltop is home to students from over 100 countries; introduce yourself to someone new as often as possible! The friendships you make here will be one of a kind.

Gaston Hall often hosts prominent speakers, such as Hilary Clinton and John Mulaney, who are willing to share their knowledge and experience with you. Wake up before sunrise with some friends to grab a front-row spot in line to hear them speak. Rent a bike on campus and visit the monuments or a new museum on the weekend. Take the time to relax and recharge in our nation’s capital; you deserve it!

While stepping out of my comfort zone was “awkward” at first, it was the best thing I could have done to make my Georgetown experience what it is today. I encourage you to embrace each day of freshman year with an open mind and to not get hung up on the little things. You are not alone. After all, you have about 1,500 classmates going through a similar thing! Welcome home Hoyas!

Best,
Grace
