Please join us as the Department of Government hosts the 2024 Goldman Lecture at Georgetown University in the Mortara Center for International Studies. Professor Avraham Sela will be discussing, “Israel’s Hostage Dilemma”, and answering questions regarding this topic.

Avraham Sela is a Professor Emeritus of International Relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. He currently serves as the Aaron and Cecile Goldman Visiting Israeli Professor in the Department of Government, Georgetown University. His academic focus lies in the dynamics of contemporary Middle East politics, society, and international relations, with a particular interest in understanding foreign fighters in comparative contexts and exploring the significance of apology in resolving international conflicts. He is the co-author, alongside Shaul Mishal, of the acclaimed work “The Palestinian Hamas,” published by Columbia University Press in both 2000 and 2006. Additionally, he has served as a coeditor and contributor to projects such as “Popular Contention, Regime, and Transition: The Arab Revolts in Comparative Global Perspective” (Oxford University Press, 2016), which he co-edited with Eitan Alimi and Mario Sznajder. He has also collaborated with Alon Kadish on “Representations of Israeli and Palestinian Memories and Narratives of the 1948 War” (Indiana University Press, 2016). Currently, he is editing a book manuscript on the theme of “Captivity and Hostage Redemption between Israel and Terrorist Organizations.”
