SFS in the Field with Julia Deng: Foreign Affairs Officer @ U.S. Department of State, Bureau of African Affairs
Julia Deng (MSFS ’15) is currently a Foreign Affairs Officer in the Bureau of African Affairs, as a lead on Africa Counter China Policy. Prior to this, she was a Presidential Management Fellow in the Bureau of Conflict Stabilization Operations where she did 2 rotations 1) the East Asia Pacific (EAP) team – focused on US China relations and 2) Security Sector Stabilization (SSS) focused on analyzing Non State Armed Groups and Defections.
A strong advocate of women, peace and security, Julia also served as a reports officer at the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons (J/TIP), running East Asia Pacific programs to prevent, prosecute, protect victims against sex trafficking and forced labor. As a graduate school intern, she worked for State’s East Asia Pacific Press and PD office.
Prior to State, she worked in both the public and private sectors to include: the Department of Treasury, Department of Justice, and the Advisory Board Company. She earned a Dual BA at William and Mary studying International Relations and Chinese language, and later a Master of Science at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service, studying Global Politics and Security with an East Asia security focus. Born in China, she was deeply affected by her cultural experiences, driving her desire to explore how democratic governance, civic engagement, and technological innovation can intersect to foster meaningful change.
