About the Event:
Russia’s preoccupation with its war of aggression against Ukraine and the United States’ messy departure from Afghanistan have created uncertainty (and opportunity) in Central Asia. The disruption of power relations have cast alliances, trade connections, and plans for energy development into flux. How are geopolitical changes and sanctions rewriting the possible script for oil and gas development? How are neighboring and peripheral powers reacting to a “deflated Russia” and a shrunken US presence in Central Asia in terms of recalculating alliances and commercial prospects? This event brings together leading experts in two panels to address energy and geopolitical fields of power in Central Asia.
Panel 1: Pipe Dreams and Energy Scenarios
Donald Lu, Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, Dept. of State
Steven Mann, Consultant (former senior advisor for ExxonMobil, former Coordinator for Eurasian Energy Diplomacy for the US Department of State)
Theresa Sabonis-Helf, Professor of the Practice, Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University
Panel 2: Neighbors, Allies and Geopolitical Scenarios
Gavin Helf, Senior Expert on Central Asia, United States Institute of Peace
Anna Borshchevskaya, Senior Fellow, Washington Institute for Near East Policy
