When The Associated Press assigned Ruth Bonapace to cover the New York Giants and other professional sports teams in 1980, she was one of only a few women on the beat. Since that time, the number of female sportswriters, sports editors and sports columnists has increased. But these women still are greatly outnumbered by the number of men covering professional sports.
