American Studies Information Session for First Years in the College – in person
Are you interested in working on Wall Street, on the Hill, in Silicon Valley, going to a top law school, or pursuing a graduate degree in political science, archaeology, or history? Do your interests cross departments and majors? Are you a self-starter?
If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, come to the AMERICAN STUDIES INFO SESSION.
Timing?
If you’re interested in the American Studies major you begin taking core classes in the FALL of your SOPHOMORE year (even if you don’t end up declaring the major). You need instructor permission to register and we always have more interest than we have spots. This timing and process is UNLIKE OTHER MAJORS, which is why we don’t want you to miss learning about it before you pre-register for Fall classes.
What is American Studies?
American Studies is an interdisciplinary and multi-faceted approach to studying power in American culture. What stories do the media, politics, art, music, literature, and science tell about American origins, identities, ethnicities, genders, races, and religions? In courses and in independent senior projects, students dig into specific stories that reflect their diverse interests and the complexity of American culture.
Jobs and Network?
The American Studies Major has a strong alumni network and reputation built over 50 years. Georgetown American Studies majors include: Ted Leonsis (owns Washington Capitals), Maria Shriver (journalist), Kay Madati (EVP Black Entertainment Television Networks). Recent grads are at Sony Music, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Harvard Law, NBC’s Today Show, Brookings Institute, Southern Center for Human Rights, Pandora, Teach for America, Disney, and Oracle.
