COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement

Georgetown University requires students, faculty, staff and visitors to be up to date on their COVID-19 vaccination (i.e., a primary series and, when eligible, an additional dose), or to have an approved medical or religious exemption. This requirement applies to:

  • All faculty and staff, including teleworking employees;
  • Students enrolled in one or more in-person courses;
  • Students enrolled in any online or hybrid courses that have an in-person component on campus or at an off-campus location used by Georgetown for course instruction (including but not limited to students enrolled in an online nursing program program who will complete an Objective Clinical Intensive (OCI)); and
  • Visitors to University-owned, operated or leased buildings in the United States.

The University’s COVID-19 vaccination requirement will continue to be updated as public health conditions evolve.

Vaccination is one of the most important tools to protect members of our community from the potentially serious health consequences of COVID-19 and to reduce the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19. COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective. Current evidence has shown that an additional dose (“booster”) substantially increases our immune response, including to the Omicron variant, and data from around the world has shown that having received the entire series (i.e., primary series and, when eligible, an additional dose) helps prevent severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19.

How to Meet the COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement

To meet the COVID-19 vaccination requirement, students, faculty and staff must submit documentation (e.g., CDC COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card) showing they have received the primary series and, when eligible, an additional dose of a COVID-19 vaccine authorized for emergency use or granted approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or the World Health Organization (WHO). Please follow these instructions to submit your documentation through the GU360 mobile app or GU360 website.

Students also need to submit all other required immunization records through the Georgetown University Immunization and Health Information Database Portal. Please visit the Student Health Center website for more information.

Visitors to University-owned, operated or leased buildings in the United States will need to follow the instructions on the Event and Visitor Guidelines page.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended that everyone get a booster shot 2 months after their Johnson & Johnson vaccination, or 5 months after their second dose of the Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, or other WHO-approved vaccine. The additional dose may be any of the COVID-19 vaccines approved by the FDA or the WHO. However, the CDC recommends against receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and issued a recommendation to receive one of the mRNA vaccines as the additional dose regardless of the vaccine received for the primary series.

If you received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine for your primary and booster doses, you may receive a second booster dose of the Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine at least 4 months after your first booster dose, and we recommend that you do so to enhance your protection.

Students, faculty, staff and visitors who have been vaccinated recently and are not yet eligible to get their additional dose are up to date on their vaccination. When they become eligible, they will have an automatic two-week extension during which time they will need to get their additional dose and submit documentation of it to Georgetown.

If you received the Sinopharm or Sinovac vaccine, we recommend that you receive additional shots of an FDA-approved or authorized vaccine even if it’s been less than six months since your last shot.

Individuals who have received a COVID-19 vaccine that is not currently authorized by the FDA or the WHO will need to be re-vaccinated with a FDA-authorized vaccine upon arrival on campus. Please submit the COVID-19 Vaccine Extension Request Form for guidance on scheduling an appointment and receiving a deadline extension, and submit proof of your prior vaccination through the GU360 mobile app or GU360 website.

Individuals who will not be up to date on their vaccination when they arrive on campus because COVID-19 vaccines are not available or widely accessible in their home country will need to be vaccinated with an FDA-authorized vaccine upon arrival on campus. Please submit the COVID-19 Vaccine Extension Request Form for guidance on scheduling an appointment and receiving a deadline extension.

Individuals who are being re-vaccinated, are in between doses, have received two doses but two weeks have not passed since their final dose, or come from countries where vaccines are not given to those who have had a recent infection with COVID-19 will need to request a deadline extension, by submitting the COVID-19 Vaccine Extension Request Form to coordinate their vaccination plan.

Individuals who receive a deadline extension will be able to participate in in-person activities and classes on campus while they are receiving their vaccination, but they will need to wear a mask when around others and participate in enhanced testing protocols until they have submitted documentation showing they are up to date on their vaccination.

Individuals who recently had a COVID-19 infection can receive a COVID-19 vaccine as soon as their isolation has ended, but they may delay receiving a booster dose by 90 days from the onset of symptoms or a positive test. You will have to show proof of having tested positive via a letter from your physician or an official test result.

Please visit Vaccines.gov to find the closest vaccination site to you. You may receive the primary series or the additional (“booster”) dose without a prescription and at no charge to you at your local pharmacy, community clinic or doctor’s office.

COVID-19 Vaccination PTO

All staff and AAP employees, including part-time and temporary employees, are provided 88 hours (equal to 11 full-time working days) of COVID-19 Vaccination Paid Time Off (PTO), which is only to be used if an employee cannot work, either on campus or remotely, during their scheduled work hours because of the following reasons:

  • Vaccination Appointments: Up to 4 hours of COVID-19 Vaccination PTO per injection appointment, including primary vaccination dose(s) and booster(s), for the following individuals:
    • Employee’s appointment to receive a COVID-19 vaccination.
    • Employee’s minor child’s appointment to receive a COVID-19 vaccination (for the purposes of this policy, a “minor child” means a child under the age of 18 years who lives with an employee and for whom the employee permanently assumes and discharges parental responsibility, or a foster child under the age of 18 years).
  • Vaccination Recovery: Up to 16 hours of COVID-19 Vaccination PTO per vaccination appointment, available to be taken within the 2 days following a vaccination appointment, for the following individuals:
    • Employee’s own short-term side effects after receiving a COVID-19 vaccination.
    • Employee’s minor child’s short-term side effects after receiving a COVID-19 vaccination.

Staff who have submitted their vaccination documentation have received two additional days of Vaccine Registration PTO to use by June 30, 2022.

Religious and Medical Exemptions Anchor

Religious and Medical Exemptions

Medical and religious exemptions are granted in accordance with federal and local law.

Students may request a medical or religious exemption from the COVID-19 vaccination requirement by completing the exemption request form and submitting the information required.

Faculty and staff may request a medical exemption to the COVID-19 vaccination requirement by completing the Disability Accommodation Request for Employees form and submitting the information required. Faculty and staff may request a religious exemption by completing the Religious Accommodation form

If a medical or religious waiver is granted, the student, faculty or staff member will receive an individualized accommodation with information on the public health measures that they will need to take, including the wearing of masks when around others and participating in frequent asymptomatic COVID-19 testing.
