Leveraging Talk for Antiracism in Education
The M.A. Educational Transformation and the Program in Education, Inquiry & Justice invite you to a series on Leveraging Talk for Antiracism in Education featuring Dr. Sherice Clarke (University of California, San Diego) and Dr. Mica Pollock (University of California, San Diego).
Talk abstract:
Research has long offered insights into the systemic and everyday ways in which racism is performed in schools and racial inequality reproduced. Implicitly or explicitly, research has led attention to a particular aspect of everyday practice: how everyday talk in schools plays a role in reproducing racism and racial inequality, and conversely, the antiracist possibilities of talk and dialogue in schools. Seemingly “micro” moments of talk and dialogue can have consequences–in aggregate–on student identities, opportunities to learn, and futures. We are both doing work asking educators to learn to see and reorganize the consequences these micro-moments have in aggregate on student opportunities and futures, to go beyond just calling for “more antiracism.” In this talk, we each share our research and then engage in a dialogue on how these micro-moments of educational interaction can be leveraged to do antiracism – reorganizing and redesigning school communications towards more just, humane and ubiquitous antiracist teaching and learning.
