Misinformation and the Role of Social Media in Elections
Perhaps no topic from 2016 remains quite as unresolved as the role social media and big tech play in American democracy. Professors and authors Lisa Singh and Ceren Budak will appear in conversation with Peter Hamby (C ’03), Host of Snapchat’s Good Luck America, and Jenna Lowenstein (C ’09), Deputy Campaign Manager for Cory Booker’s 2020 Presidential Campaign and Digital Director for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 Presidential Campaign. Moderated by Issie Lapowsky, a senior reporter for Protocol covering politics and technology, this discussion will explore how misinformation was created and spread during the 2016 election, what has changed since 2016, and what can be done about the problem of misinformation. Join us for this exciting discussion on the roles and responsibility of social media and big technology in the 2020 election.
This event will be live-streamed on GU Politics’ social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube). Or, register here to receive a Zoom link: https://forms.gle/6eypzrcxbLro5u2K9
