Title: Update Regarding Recent Police Activity in DC

Dear Members of the Georgetown University Community,

I am writing to address recent developments regarding law enforcement in Washington, DC, and to reassure you of our ongoing commitment to your safety and the principles that guide our university community.

The recent mobilization of the DC National Guard and the 30-day federalization of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) have understandably raised questions and concerns. Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD) and the Capitol Campus Department of Public Safety (DPS) remain the primary law enforcement entities with responsibility for our campuses. Their dedication to our community is unwavering.

We do not anticipate any significant changes to our long-standing, mutually respectful relationship with our local MPD precincts, which is critical to ensuring the safety of our campus and surrounding neighborhoods. Based on reporting in recent days, you may notice an increase in law enforcement presence throughout the city, including in areas of our campuses that are open to the general public. As always, we expect any law enforcement activity on our campuses to be conducted in a manner that respects the rights of our community members and fully complies with due process requirements. We also expect community members to engage respectfully with law enforcement officers on and off campus.

We recognize this news may impact members of our community in a variety of ways. The following resources are available for students, faculty and staff:

The safety and security of our community will continue to be our top priority. If you see anything that concerns you, please do not hesitate to contact GUPD (202-687-4343) or Capitol Campus DPS (202-662-9325).

Sincerely,

Erik Smulson
Vice President for Public Affairs
