Dear Graduate Students,
In February, we shared a brief overview of upcoming changes to federal student loans for graduate and professional students, as well as a list of preferred lenders to support students seeking alternatives to finance their graduate education. Now, as we approach July 1, when many of these changes are scheduled to take effect, we are sharing an update on how your financial aid may be affected in the upcoming year, whether you are a returning student or just beginning your graduate-level education.
While the federal landscape continues to evolve, you can find the most current information pertaining to Georgetown on our “Key Changes to Federal Student Loans Effective in July 2026” landing page. This includes, but is not limited to:
- New graduate loan limits and definitions of professional degrees, which impact your personal loan limit;
- Changes to loan repayment plans, including the Public Student Loan Forgiveness program;
- New loan limits for Parent PLUS loans;
- Students enrolled less than full-time will have the amount of loan eligibility reduced proportionally to their level of enrollment.
The information shared on the above website is based on official guidance from the Federal Student Aid website and is updated when changes are made.
As a reminder, Georgetown has vetted and identified six private lenders that offer competitive private education loan options to domestic and international students. Additional information about preferred lending options is available on the Main Campus Office of Student Financial Aid, School of Medicine Financial Aid and Law Center Financial Aid websites.
Georgetown’s focus remains on supporting students through these changes, and any others that may arise, while providing guidance and information about the resources available to help them finance their education. If you have questions about financial aid, please reach out to the financial aid office for your academic program (contact information for these offices can be found on the above websites).
Sincerely,
Soyica Diggs Colbert
