Title: U.S. Army 250th Birthday Celebration Impacts this weekend 6/13-14

Dear Members of the Georgetown University Community,

We are reaching out to inform you that due to anticipated impacts of the upcoming U.S. Army 250th Birthday celebration, the university’s operating status for Friday, June 13, and Saturday, June 14, will be Open with Liberal Leave and Instructional Continuity (see below for instructional status impacts).

The Saturday, June 14 celebration will include a festival on the National Mall, a parade along Constitution Avenue, a concert at the Ellipse and fireworks.

Instructional Status

Classes will begin at their normally scheduled times and in their normal locations unless faculty notify their classes that they are implementing their instructional continuity plan.

Employee Status

Designated emergency employees must report to work on campus on time. All other employees are expected to work as scheduled, either on campus or remotely.

Employees, including those working remotely, who are unable to maintain their normal work schedule should follow their department’s normal call-in procedure and use accrued paid leave, if appropriate. Medical and Nursing School students with essential clinical assignments are to report for duty.

Essential Services

Essential services will continue; however, regular schedules may be adjusted and communicated via the corresponding websites:

Transportation Impacts

We ask colleagues to please prepare for impacts to their commute from Thursday, June 12, through Sunday, June 15. Please take note of the important information below as you plan your commute:

  • Road Closures & Access to Parking Garages
  • Metro Access
    • Subscribe to MetroAlerts to be notified of Metro service impacts via email or text. You can also find information on WMATA status and alerts on this website.
  • GUTS Bus
    • GUTS service will still operate. The Dupont, Rosslyn, Wisconsin and Arlington routes will not change.
    • The Capitol Campus Shuttle will operate on a modified route to avoid the road closures that are set to begin Thursday evening at 7 p.m. The Capitol Campus route will not service Peace Circle or Garfield Circle during this time period.
    • Delays should be expected on all routes due to heavier than normal traffic.

Additional Resources

To stay informed of any operational changes, consider the following:

  • Enroll in AlertDC. AlertDC is the official District of Columbia communications system that allows you to receive emergency alerts, notifications, and updates directly from DC’s public safety officials.
  • Confirm/update your contact information for HOYAlerts. All current students, faculty and staff are automatically enrolled to receive email and text messages from HOYAlert, Georgetown’s mass notification system used in the event of an emergency situation or incident on campus. Take a moment to confirm or update your HOYAlert contact information. You can also “follow” HOYAlert on X (Twitter). You do not need to opt in for HOYAlerts for your primary campus; however, if you would like to opt in to receive HOYAlerts for additional locations (e.g., opt-in for the Capitol Campus if you are based on the Hilltop Campus) you can do so in
  • Use the LiveSafe Mobile App. LiveSafe is a personal security system that connects users with the Georgetown University Police Department and the Capitol Campus Department of Public Safety when activated during an emergency situation. The app also allows users to report suspicious activity, request a SafeRide Shuttle or personal escort, access resources on emergency preparedness and use SafeWalk to share their location with friends.

Thank you for your attention to these important updates and reminders.

Sincerely,
