Title: Alumnus Tim Brosnan Named Big East Commissioner

Tim Brosnan (C’80), a sports and media executive and Georgetown alumnus, has been named the sixth commissioner of the Big East Conference.

Brosnan, who will succeed Val Ackerman as chairman, will begin his tenure on Sept. 1, 2026. The Big East Conference includes 11 member institutions, including Georgetown.

“Over the course of his career, Tim Brosnan has shown to be a smart, highly-respected leader with high personal and professional values rooted in his dedication to the service of others,” said Rev. Brian Shanley, president of St. John’s University and chair of the conference’s board of directors. “His track record of forging highly successful partnerships will be critical in this new era of college athletics. Tim is a relationship-builder and, as a former student-athlete in the conference, cares deeply about the success of the young men and women who represent the Big East.”

Brosnan, who studied government in the College of Arts & Sciences, pitched all four years on the Georgetown men’s baseball team and served as captain his senior year. He later went on to work in the sports industry.

Peñalver. “Tim brings great character, significant leadership at both the professional and collegiate levels, a deep understanding of this moment in the Big East, and a love of college athletics from his time as a Hoya student-athlete and team captain — a fantastic combination.”

Brosnan spent 24 years working for Major League Baseball (MLB), including most recently serving as the executive vice president for business and president and CEO of Major League Baseball Enterprises. He was also vice president of business affairs and later the president and CEO of Major League Baseball International. In 2000, Brosnan became the executive vice president for business and led the league’s broadcasting and media rights, licensing, corporate sales, marketing, special events, MLB Charities and MLB Productions.

At MLB, Brosnan led negotiations for national media rights deals that generated over $20 billion for the league. Brosnan also developed and launched MLB Network, a first-of-its-kind baseball-only cable channel. He also led the launch of the World Baseball Classic, an international baseball tournament that is driving the league’s global expansion. 

After leaving MLB in 2015, Brosnan founded PrimeSport, a sports media consultancy, where he worked with MLB teams, Activision, FanDuel, the United Soccer League and others.

Earlier in his career, New York Governor Mario Cuomo appointed Brosnan to the New York State Commission on Government Integrity, where he rose to be the counsel to the chairman.

He also served on Georgetown’s Board of Regents and chaired the Athletic Committee. From 2021-2025, he founded and led Hoyas Rising, a private company which served as the external name, image and likeness arm for Georgetown Athletics. This year, the Georgetown University Alumni Association awarded Brosnan with the John Carroll Award, which is given to alumni who exemplify the ideals and traditions of Georgetown and its founder, Archbishop John Carroll.
