Dear Students,
We recognize the significant hardships and uncertainty created by the 2025 federal government shutdown. As part of our commitment to supporting our community during challenging times, Georgetown University is providing support to students who have been impacted.
Georgetown is implementing a grace period during which furloughed students, students experiencing delays or cancellation of Department of Defense (DoD) education benefits, and the dependents of furloughed employees will be exempt from outstanding balance service charges. There will be no holds on registration as a result of late payments. Please note, this exemption does not cover payment plan interest charges and is not retroactive; it does not apply to any service charges assessed before the shutdown that started Oct. 1.
Students who have been financially affected by the 2025 Federal Government shutdown should complete the Impacted Student Certification Form by Friday, Oct. 24, 2025. The form requires documentation from the federal agency confirming your status during the shutdown.
Impacted students include:
- Students who have been furloughed as federal employees or contractors;
- Students who have been designated as essential federal employees and are required to work without pay;
- Students who are dependent on one of the above categories of federal workers for the payment of their tuition;
- Students using DoD education benefits that have been delayed or canceled.
Impacted students who complete the form and submit the required documentation will be protected from monthly service charges on any unpaid balance for the duration of the 2025 federal government shutdown, and will remain eligible to register for the Spring 2026 semester without interruption.
You may be eligible for additional financial aid if there has been a change in your financial circumstances that was not reported on your initial aid application. If you would like to request a recalculation of your expected contribution based on a correction, change, or special circumstance, please contact the Financial Aid Office for your campus.
