Dear Resident,
As spring classes end, the Residential Living team wishes you success during study days and finals. Please review the following information to ensure a smooth move-out.
Safety & Security
Each year at this time, we see an uptick in issues relating to the security of property in our residential buildings. Please remember:
- Lock your doors and secure your property.
- Keep an eye on who is coming into campus buildings with you. Do not let unauthorized people come in with you.
- Do not prop open any doorways.

- Please ensure your key is placed in a completed Key Return Envelope and dropped off by your scheduled check-out date.

- Failure to return your key by the deadline will result in a $150 unreturned key fee.
Trash & Donations & Carts
- Remove all personal items; dispose of trash in designated bins.
- A $200 per bag/box/large item removal fee is assessed to each individual in the unit for any trash/belongings left behind.
- Participate in the Move-Out Drive (May 4-8 and 11-14, 12–4 p.m.; May 9,10,17,18, 9–4 p.m.) to donate gently used items.
- Carts available 8 a.m.-10 p.m., 2-hour max. $200 fine for unreturned/damaged carts.
Annual Donation Move Out Drive and Sustainability Reminders
Please take the following steps to ensure you have a more sustainable move-out and reduce your environmental impact:
- Please donate items you can’t take home or no longer need to the Annual Move Out Drive! Please visit the Move Out Drive page for donation dates and locations at the Hilltop and Capitol campuses.
- Bring your non-perishable food items to either the Annual Move Out Drive or the Hoya Hub Food Pantry for donation, which helps support Georgetown community members who are food-insecure.
- Opt to use reusable storage containers instead of boxes. Utilize backpacks, laundry bins and other bags to pack additional items to maximize space. If you need extra packing materials, consider sustainable options such as boxes made from recycled content and compostable bubble wrap. Make sure to break down any cardboard boxes you may have and place them in their designated place.
- Unplug your electronics, such as chargers, printers and small appliances, when not in use. If unable to power down or unplug, ensure your electronic devices are set to energy-saving or sleep mode. Ensure all lights are turned off before leaving the room.
- All dishes borrowed throughout the year should be returned to Leo’s Dining Hall before Sunday, May 10, or placed in the “collect dish” boxes available in the lobby of several residence halls during the week of Monday, May 4.
- Close and secure all windows and lower blinds to reduce heat loss.
- Ensure all faucets are turned off
- Notify Facilities Management of any heating, cooling, water or lighting issues that must be addressed.
Get involved and stay current on ways to improve your environmental impact and help the university meet its sustainability goals. Learn more about Georgetown’s sustainability programs or follow the office on social media @SustainableGU.
