Dear Georgetown Students,
In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak and with spring break on the horizon, it is more important than ever that our community pay attention to international travel guidance in order to keep travelers safe.
As you make plans for international research, internships or other programs, remember that all international travel supported by or related to the university must adhere to Georgetown’s International Travel Policy.
According to the policy, all Main Campus and Medical Center undergraduate and graduate students planning university-related or sponsored travel abroad must complete the International Travel Authorization process. Law Center students must complete a separate process for travel approval through the Office of Transnational Programs.
By completing the process, students will confirm they have adequate health insurance and will register their travel with the online Georgetown Travel Registration system managed by International SOS (ISOS). This registration enables the university to provide travelers with support in the event of an emergency and is critically important to tracking university-related travel.
If you are planning personal travel to an international destination, we highly recommend that you abide by U.S. government guidance and be mindful of potential associated risk of disruptions to your return and your ability to successfully complete the semester.
We strongly suggest that U.S. citizens register travel through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling and living abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Registration allows you to be easily located by embassy personnel in the event of an emergency.
In addition to adhering to the university travel policy, students can refer to the Office of Global Services and the U.S. State Department tips to stay safe while traveling abroad.
As a reminder, all university-sponsored travel to mainland China has been suspended for faculty, staff and students until further notice. You can find university updates, answers to frequently asked questions and other university resources related to coronavirus on the Georgetown University website.
Please contact Catey Williams in the Office of Global Services with any questions about the university’s international travel policy. Additional information about travel services at Georgetown can be found on the Georgetown Travel Services website.
Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Robert M. Groves, Provost
