Title: Georgetown University to Hold Class of 2023 Commencement May 18-21

Speakers Include NBC Anchors, Ukrainian Postmaster, Political Prisoner’s Daughter

Georgetown University will hold Commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2023 on the weekend of May 18-21. Each of the undergraduate and professional schools at the University will hold its own ceremony featuring different marquee speakers, including (in alphabetical order): 

  • Yamiche Léone Alcindor (C’09), Washington correspondent, NBC News (College of Arts & Sciences)
  • Brian Greene, professor of physics and mathematics and director of the Center for Theoretical Physics, Columbia University (Graduate School of Arts & Sciences)
  • Savannah Guthrie (L’02), co-anchor, NBC News’ Today; chief legal correspondent, NBC News (Georgetown Law)
  • Dan Helfrich (SFS’98, MBA’99), chair and CEO, Deloitte Consulting LLP (McDonough School of Business: undergraduate ceremony)
  • Dr. Camara Phyllis Jones, Leverhulme Visiting Professor in the Department of Global Health & Social Medicine, King’s College London (School of Health)
  • Jason Kander (L’05), president of national expansion, Veterans Community Project; founder, Afghan Rescue Project (School of Continuing Studies)
  • Frank H. McCourt, Jr. (C’75), founder, Project Liberty; executive chairman, McCourt Global (McCourt School of Public Policy)
  • Dasha Navalnaya, daughter of imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny (Walsh School of Foreign Service)
  • Rear Admiral Susan Orsega, senior advisor to the assistant secretary for health and the U.S. Surgeon General (School of Nursing)
  • Dr. Joan Reede, dean for diversity and community partnership, Harvard University (School of Medicine)
  • Igor Smelyansky (MBA’05), CEO, Ukrainian Postal Service (McDonough School of Business: graduate ceremony)

Almost all ceremonies will take place on Healy Lawn, just inside Georgetown’s front gate. The Georgetown University School of Medicine ceremony will take place at DAR Constitution Hall, 1776 18th St. NW. In the event of severe weather, Healy Lawn ceremonies will be held at McDonough Arena on Georgetown’s main campus. See full schedules for more details.

To request credentials to cover Commencement on campus, members of the media must email media@georgetown.edu. Permission must be granted by the Georgetown University Office of Communications in advance. Please specify if you will need a camera position.

MORE INFORMATION AND LOGISTICS:

In addition to the speakers, Georgetown’s Commencement activities offer excellent live stand-up, news photo and b-roll opportunities including historic campus buildings and an oversized HOYA SAXA sign on the main lawn. 

Please expect extremely limited parking on and around campus. There is no reserved media parking. Any live broadcast should use Live-U type “backpacks;” satellite trucks cannot be accommodated on campus.
