Bird populations are plummeting.
A new study from Georgetown shows that more than half of all migratory bird species around the world are in decline. The study, led by Peter Marra, dean of the Earth Commons Institute, underscores a growing risk of extinction for scores of bird species.
“These declines are not inevitable,” Marra said. “We know conservation works. This review shows that we have the scientific knowledge needed to reverse many of these declines. The challenge now is bringing together the partnerships, resources, and political and public commitment to implement those solutions at the scale migratory birds require.”
While many conservation efforts exist on a local level, incomplete monitoring and the complexity of tracking birds that migrate thousands of miles between continents make it hard for researchers to understand where in the world presents the greatest risk to migratory birds, the study finds.
The new research follows Marra’s previous study in 2019 that demonstrated that, since 1970, bird populations have declined by about 3 billion in North America, or roughly a third of the continent’s bird population.

Habitat loss, from constructing office buildings and commercial complexes to tilling new farmland, is likely a major driver for the decline in bird populations, said Marra, a professor of biology and the environment who previously led the Smithsonian Institution’s Migratory Bird Center. Once birds lose their habitat, he said, it can be difficult for them to find and adapt to new environments.
“Birds can’t adapt overnight to living in a totally different place or a new habitat. All birds are somewhat specialized for where they live,” Marra said. “When we change those habitats to something less natural, you don’t typically get many species in those areas.”
Birds play important roles in the ecosystems they inhabit, from pollination to dispersing seeds. As indicator species, they help to indicate the overall health of our environment. They’re also important to preserve simply because they exist, Marra said
In 2020, Marra helped found Road to Recovery, now a Georgetown-based initiative that identifies targeted interventions for over 100 species of birds in North America that are nearing endangered status. Marra believes that with the right mix of policy, public and private action, bird populations can be restored.
“Nature is resilient. If given a chance, we can figure out exactly how to minimize our impact on birds,” he said. “They will come back, but they need to be given a chance.”
We asked Marra what’s driving the decline in bird populations and what policies and everyday actions people can take to protect birds.

What role do birds play in ecosystems, and how do they impact humans?
What is the purpose of humans in our ecosystem? Think about that. We always take a very biased, anthropogenic perspective. I prefer not to think about our Earth as a place just for humans. Our Earth is a place for all living things. They deserve to exist just as much as humans do.
We need to make sure that our ‘common home,’ as Pope Francis put it, is a place shared equally among all living things because all living things have a right to live.
Birds matter because they are living things and add enormous diversity and beauty to the environment. They also fulfill lots of important ecosystem roles like seed dispersal, pollination, predation and classic sorts of roles humans have defined that keep ecosystems intact.
All these ecosystems, humans are intricately tied to, despite the fact that we want to believe we’re separate from our environment. Everything comes from the environment at some level. At the end of the day, we come from the environment, and we will end up in it.
Because birds are vocal, easy to see, easy to count, they are indicative of the health of an ecosystem. If birds aren’t doing well, chances are we’re not doing well.
How would you characterize the current trend in declining bird populations?
Over the last 40 to 50 years, we’ve seen a major decline in most birds. For some species, this decline has accelerated in the last 10 to 15 years. We’ve lost about 3 billion birds [in North America], about a third of the bird populations in the U.S. and Canada. This pattern is similar across the entire world. There are a lot of cases of extinctions where bird species that we once considered quite common are now completely off the face of the Earth, which is pretty depressing.
Unfortunately, our recent research shows that more than half of the world’s migratory bird species are in decline.
But that paper’s most important message is actually hopeful. So much remains to be learned, but at the same time, advances in conservation science — like satellite tracking, AI, genomics and global citizen science — have transformed our ability to identify the factors driving species declines. We have better tools than ever, and the most evidence in history of what has actually worked.
