Georgetown is committed to making sure that campus programs and services respond to the needs of all students. We recognize that race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, class, disability status, and other factors uniquely impact the experience of each student.

As we continue to enhance the resources available, we acknowledge the real challenges faced by some students – particularly students of color, women and LGBTQ students – in accessing services and navigating formal and informal support.

Below, please find an update on commitments we have made to improve equity and access of services, along with ongoing work and future efforts. We hope to earn your confidence in this work as we continue to engage with students.

Commitments to Improving Equity and Access

  • Extended hours for emergency clinicians in triage spaces for students to receive counseling at the Center for Multicultural Equity and Access, the LGBTQ Center, the Women’s Center and the Center for Student Engagement.
  • Further integration of cultural competence into the services at Counseling and Psychiatric Service (CAPS), as well as continuing to make funds available, in partnership with GUSA, to fund off-campus mental health services for students with financial need.
  • Exploration of identity on campus through a cultural climate survey, set to launch in February 2020.
  • Continued conversations with students and student groups, including students of color, about sexual misconduct.
  • Regular updates to members of our community about student-facing staff whose work relates to sexual misconduct.
  • Continued training opportunities for staff and faculty on the role of managing implicit bias in our community.

Office of Title IX Compliance

  • The Title IX office hired a Title IX and Civil Rights Investigator, who will begin work in February 2020, after consulting with key campus partners and students with diverse identities.
  • In 2019 and 2020 the Office of Title IX Compliance conducted office hours for students in the Leavey Center, the Center for Student Engagement and the LGBTQ Resource Center. The office also conducted training and discussed Title IX resources, processes and policies with Black House and Casa Latina residents at the beginning of fall 2019 and spring 2020.
  • The Title IX office, Office of Student Conduct and Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity & Affirmative Action (IDEAA), in partnership with the Center for Social Justice, engaged in a conversation and discussion about Title IX processes and resources with women/femmes of color in spring 2020.
  • The university released the results of the 2019 Sexual Assault and Misconduct Climate Survey in fall 2019. After the release, the Title IX office and key campus administrators conducted listening sessions across the Main Campus, Law Center and School of Medicine.
  • On January 15, 2020 representatives from IDEAA, the Division of Student Affairs, the Office of General Counsel, the Title IX office, and the Office of Federal Relations met with representatives from the Office of Management and Budget and the United States Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights to express Georgetown’s perspectives on the proposed Title IX regulations and reinforce the university’s position statement on this matter.
  • In spring 2018, Georgetown launched an online comprehensive resource center to support those individuals who have experienced or know someone who is a survivor/victim of sexual misconduct. This tool provides information about the on- and off-campus resources available to Main Campus students. The Online Resource Center can be accessed by mobile phone, tablet or computer.
  • In spring 2018, an online reporting option was implemented so students, faculty and staff can more easily report concerns or alleged incidents related to sexual misconduct to the Office of Title IX Compliance. Such reporting helps ensure that survivors/victims of sexual misconduct understand their options and are made aware of available supports and resources. Reporting also helps the university monitor trends and patterns to more effectively prevent and respond to sexual misconduct and promote a safe campus environment.
  • The Office of Title IX Compliance continues to offer live training to faculty and administrative areas on the topic of “Culture of Care-Title IX.”

Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD)

  • GUPD established a specialized Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) comprising officers who have received enhanced training in responding to reports of sexual assault.
  • All GUPD officers undergo standard training on responding to reports of sexual assault. GUPD works in coordination with campus partners and can explain university and criminal processes to help ensure survivors understand all options moving forward.
  • All GUPD officers are required to participate in annual training focused on bias, implicit bias and bias in policing. Officers also complete online training on bias several times a year. GUPD recently organized a department-wide seminar in 2020 on stereotypes, bias, implicit bias and microaggressions facilitated by Benjamin Reese, a renowned expert on these issues. The workshop gave officers the opportunity to actively participate in discussion around preventing bias. This presentation is part of continuing series of trainings on issues of bias, implicit bias and diversity in law enforcement and higher education.
  • GUPD meets twice per month with students to receive input through the Student Safety Advisory Board. Students can also provide feedback directly to GUPD through its feedback form. Any member of the community can also make a report about a possible bias-related incident with IDEAA via the Bias Reporting System.

Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity & Affirmative Action (IDEAA)

  • In January 2020, IDEAA, which oversees the Office of Title IX Compliance, added a new senior role with the hire of Olabisi “Bisi” Ladeji Okubadejo as associate vice president for affirmative action, equal opportunity and compliance.
  • Rosemary Kilkenny, vice president, diversity, equity & inclusion and chief diversity officer, and Adanna Johnson, associate vice president for student equity and inclusion, met with students at the Black House in April 2019 to discuss concerns specific to black and other students of color related to mental health and sexual assault services. They held follow-up conversations in spring 2020.
  • IDEAA continues to offer the following online course to the university community: “Respect: Preventing Discrimination, Harassment & Sexual Misconduct.” IDEAA also offers customized live trainings on such topics as implicit bias in hiring, practical and legal considerations, understanding and disrupting bias in the workplace classroom, and will continue to offer these live trainings.
  • In addition to the Title IX investigator, the diverse IDEAA staff are trained and have expertise in conducting Title IX investigations in all varieties of cases – student-student, faculty-staff, faculty/staff-student, etc.

Division of Student Affairs

  • In January 2020, Annie Selak was named associate director at the Georgetown Women’s Center. Her work focuses on student programming, mentoring experiences, and building a network of support for students.
  • In November 2019, Amena Johnson joined the LGBTQ Resource Center as assistant director. Her work focuses on building programs, peer education and developing retreats. Both Selak and Johnson report to Shiva Subbaraman who serves as the executive director of these centers.
  • Per the request of students, the office contracted black psychologists to host process groups for women/femmes and men/masculine students in April 2019 and November 2019.
  • In May 2019, the Office of Student Affairs and the Office of the Provost announced the creation of the Office of Student Equity and Inclusion with Adanna J. Johnson, Ph.D., as associate vice president. In this new role, she provides leadership for a broad range of work focused on student access and success, diversity and inclusion work with students and Georgetown’s work with the American Talent Initiative. She supervises the Center for Multicultural Equity and Access (CMEA), including the Community Scholars Program and the Georgetown Scholars Program.
  • The Division of Student Affairs is making equity and inclusion a focus for professional development from 2020-2022, which will include a series of full day workshops and retreats for staff, directors and senior leadership.

Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS)

  • In January 2020, CAPS reinstituted biweekly programming in diversity, equity and inclusion issues, focusing on fostering multicultural competence including a workshop on microaggression.
  • Beginning January 2020, CAPS has doubled the amount of time John C. Wright, associate director for diversity initiatives, spends at CMEA.
  • Beginning in November 2019, selected CAPS staff fanned out to spaces including CMEA, the LGBTQ Center and the Women’s Center both during and after regular business hours to offer urgently needed triage and counseling to those in distress.
