Title: Georgetown Takes New Steps to Advance Gender Equity Among Faculty Following Task Force Report

“The work ahead is to ensure that our commitment to equity – across gender, race, ethnicity, disability, religion, sexual orientation, age, and the range of identities that shape the lives of those in our community – is alive in our institutional practices and our campus culture.”

– President John J. DeGioia

Building on Community Support

Implementing the task force recommendations will supplement other actions the university has taken to support the Georgetown community, both during and before the coronavirus pandemic.

In recognition of dependent care challenges faced by faculty and staff due to COVID-related closings of school, child care and elder care services, Georgetown launched GUCares COVID-19 Dependent Care Assistance grants and committed significant additional funds to support members of the community facing financial distress. The university also compiled COVID-19 resources for faculty and is taking steps to support the resumption of research and scholarship for faculty who were unable to sustain the trajectory of their scholarship due to the pandemic.

In recent federal COVID-19 relief legislation, Georgetown received funds that will, over the coming months, help support dependent care related to the pandemic for faculty and staff and reduce some of the challenges of resuming faculty research.

Gender Justice at Georgetown

Georgetown also promotes gender equity among students, faculty and staff through the Women’s Center, the LGBTQ Resource Center, the Georgetown Women’s Alliance (GWA), Georgetown Women in Medicine (GWIM), the Georgetown University Women’s Forum and enhanced work on Title IX and sexual assault issues.

The university is home to numerous academic units that address gender, including the Women’s and Gender Studies Program, the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security, the Domestic Violence Clinic and International Women’s Human Rights Clinic, Women’s Law and Public Policy Fellowship Program, the Initiative on Gender Justice & Opportunity and G+JI.
