SUMMARY:Physics Colloquium: The Cosmic Nursery of Black Holes and Galaxies
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Sadegh Khochfar\, University of Edinburgh \nAbstract: With the imminent launch of the James-Webb space telescope in 2021 an unique window into the first billion years of the Universe will open.\nThe first billion years see galaxies growing at a rate that they will not maintain ever again during the history of the Universe\, doubling in mass every few 100 million years. In addition\, black holes grow to billions of solar masses from only thousands of solar masses. These observations pose significant challenges to theoretical models and simulations. In my talk I will present the current understanding of structure formation during this epoch and discuss potential solutions to some of the challenges in galaxy and black hole evolution.

SUMMARY:Buddhist-Christian Perspectives on Contemplative Practices and Religious Belonging
DESCRIPTION:The Society for Buddhist-Christian Studies (SBCS) is a coordinating body supporting activities related to the comparative study of\, and the practical interaction between\, Buddhism and Christianity. The society welcomes scholars and practitioners who are grounded in different expressions of Buddhism and Christianity\, and it encourages those who report on Buddhist-Christian dialogue and comparative study\, both as historical research and contemporary practice\, to employ analytical and theoretical tools and set their discussion within the framework of broader human history. As part of its annual conference\, the Society for Buddhist-Christian Studies will host two panels over two days: “Contemplative Practices and Religious Experiences: Buddhist-Christian Perspectives” and “Natal and Convert Christians and Buddhists.” \nContemplative practices and religious experiences are at the core of much of religious life in both Buddhist and Christian religious life. Yet\, they are often overlooked in the academic study of these religions and in religious studies generally. In the December 1 session\, four panelists will present papers that examine these overlooked dimensions of contemplative practices such as Buddhist meditation and Christian contemplation within a dialogical and comparative framework of religious experience in interreligious perspective. The December 2 panel will engage in a roundtable discussion about diverse patterns of religious life in terms of religious ideals\, praxes\, and social organization in Buddhist-Christian dialogical context to gain new insights into the strengths and weaknesses of natal versus convert religious belonging\, as well as the interaction between these demographics. \nThis event is co-sponsored by Georgetown University’s Department of Theology and Religious Studies and its Berkley Center for Religion\, Peace\, and World Affairs. \nInstructions to join each session will be sent via email prior to the event to anyone who has filled out the RSVP form. Each session will be recorded and captioned videos will be posted to the event page after the event date. Please RSVP to receive an email notification once they are posted. \nSchedule\n  \n\n\nTuesday\, December 1\n4:00 – 6:00 p.m. EST | Contemplative Practices and Religious Experiences: Buddhist-Christian Perspectives \nPaula Arai\, Louisiana State University\nPeter Feldmeier\, University of Toledo\nKevin Hunt\, St. Joseph’s Abbey\nKristin Johnston Largen\, United Lutheran Seminary\nRuben L. SUMMARY:Dissertation Defense: Xiangwen Lai
DESCRIPTION:Candidate Name: Xiangwen Lai \nMajor: Physics \nAdvisor: Jeffrey S. Urbach\, Ph.D. \nTitle: Shear Thickening of Silica Rod Suspension \nColloidal particles in a liquid such as silica rod suspensions exhibit non-Newtonian behaviors like continuous shear thickening (CST) and discontinuous shear thickening (DST). These rheological behaviors of suspensions of spherical particles have been widely studied and abrupt shear thickening is known to be a result of the increasing interparticle frictional interactions with the increase of particle volume fraction and stress. These behaviors in suspensions of rod-like particles\, however\, have only recently been investigated due to the complexity of the rod-like particle suspensions under shear. While the role of the interparticle frictional forces ha s been explored\, the contribution of the aspect ratio and size of the particles to shear thickening has mostly remained unknown. Here\, we synthesize silica rods with a tunable aspect ratio in water/glycerol solution. We then perform rheological measurements to study the shear thickening behavior on several aspect ratios and sizes of the rod-like particles with various volume fractions. We demonstrate a decrease in the critical volume fraction for DST with increasing aspect ratio. With the Wyart and Cates model (W-C model)\, we can obtain the frictionless jamming fraction\, φ0\, and the frictional jamming fraction\, φm. We also investigate the effect of temperature on shear thickening and show that the flow curves of the relative viscosity under temperatures from 0 to 35 0C collapse onto a single curve.

SUMMARY:Rethinking Religion and U.S. Diplomacy: Refugee Resettlement Policies
DESCRIPTION:United States policies towards refugees demand new approaches as the new administration plans to take office in January. The roles that religious institutions play both in historical practices of resettlement and in public attitudes towards global and national approaches to forced migration are important to a comprehensive understanding of the crisis of displaced persons. The Berkley Center is engaged in ongoing research and reflection on these grave challenges. \nThis conversation will focus on ways in which refugee resettlement is taking place at the community level. Berkley Center Director Shaun Casey will address the overall challenges that lie ahead for United States refugee policy. Emily Linn and Jessica Goudeau\, who each work on refugee resettlement issues in their communities and with individuals who are in the process of resettling in the United States\, will focus on community-level responses. Berkley Center Senior Fellow Katherine Marshall will moderate. \nThis event is co-sponsored by Georgetown University’s Berkley Center for Religion\, Peace\, and World Affairs and its Global Human Development Program. \nThe Zoom Webinar link and instructions will be sent out on the morning of the event to anyone who has filled out the RSVP form. \nThis event will be recorded and a captioned video will be posted to the event page after the event date. SUMMARY:Project Management Lecture Series: "Mastering Complexity and Change in the new Project Economy"
DESCRIPTION:PMI defines The Project Economy as a “fundamental paradigm shift” in the business world toward using projects to deliver financial and societal value. “It is where organizations deliver value to stakeholders through successful completion of projects\, delivery of products\, and alignment to value streams.” These lectures will share the vast and interesting knowledge of our faculty and program partners. A lecture may include\, but is not limited to\, a traditional lecture\, demonstration\, best practice presentation\, or interactive activity. These lectures are open to the public and registration can be found here. A Zoom link will be sent to registrants the day of the event. \n  \nSchedule of Lectures: \nNovember 18\, 12:00 p.m. ET – Introduction to Business Agility with SAFe \nJoe Vallone\, SPCT & SAFe Fellow \n\nBusiness Agility is the ability to compete and thrive in the digital age by quickly responding to market changes and emerging opportunities with innovative business solutions. Business Agility requires that everyone involved in delivering solutions—business and technology leaders\, development\, IT operations\, legal\, marketing\, finance\, support\, compliance\, security\, and others—use Lean and Agile practices to continually deliver innovative\, high-quality products and services faster than the competition. Join this event to learn the 7 core competencies to mastering Business Agility.\n\n  \nNovember 18\, 6:00 p.m. ET – Building Trust: The First Step to Successful Project Management \nA. Jamshed Adel\, Author \n\nThe number of failed and challenged projects are significant today despite considerable rapid advancements in the project management methods\, tools\, and techniques. Many factors contribute to project challenges and failures that could be classified into four major categories\, including poor planning\, poor execution\, poor quality control\, and poor communication. Building Trust explores TRUST as an essential tool to address these challenges\, enhance agility\, and ensure a vital first step toward successful project management. The book proposes an effective formulated strategy for project managers and leaders to build trust in their projects. The strategy discusses Empowering and E.M.P.O.W.E.R. (Establishing a Shared Vision\, Managing Expectations\, Promoting Creativity\, Optimizing Team Collaboration\, Walking the Talk\, Eliciting Feedback\, Readjusting as Needed) as the key interrelated principles to build highly trustful project environments.\n\n  \nDecember 2\, 12:00 p.m. ET – Facilitating EQ to drive High-Performance Organizations \nDr. Saya Sone\, Adjunct Faculty at Georgetown University \n\nWhen there is a gap between how people feel and how people perform at work\, we urge leaders to learn how to facilitate Emotional Intelligence to drive high performing workplaces. Leaders will acknowledge how people’s self-awareness impacts their behavior\, perception\, and acknowledgment of the way others feel. Primarily\, the presentation is aiming to help leaders learn how to openly and effectively express themselves and honor commitments in others. If leaders could utilize Emotional Intelligence when making decisions\, they could effectively manage their mood\, emotions\, and behavior. Consequently\, leaders could continuously improve themselves and positively influence others through problem-solving\, feedback\, and supporting others’ work. The goal of the presentation is to cultivate leaders’ abilities to manage their energy and turn into the needs of the group\, allowing them to provide the best experience to build high-performing organizations.\n\n  \nDecember 2\, 6:00 p.m. ET – Moving Beyond Scrum in Agile Projects \nDominic Lepore\, President at Terrapin Consulting \n\nScrum is the most popular Agile methodology. Many organizations increase productivity quickly but then hit limitations using Scrum. This presentation discusses common issues with Scrum and introduces advanced agile techniques to continue to increase productivity\, customer satisfaction and software quality.\n\n  \nDecember 9\, 12:00 p.m. ET – Strategy and Execution Mechanisms for Artificial Intelligence Program Management \nZorina Alliata\, Sr. Global Machine Learning Strategist at Amazon \n\nEvery day\, I work with customers across all industries who are using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in their organizations. They use AI/ML primarily to automate processes\, make better business decisions\, and innovate. Creating the technical capabilities is challenging enough\, but enabling the existing Program Management Offices to correctly manage this new type of work is the bigger challenge. In this talk I will focus on a few methods and techniques to help manage the AI/ML programs from picking up the right business case\, to keeping the executive stakeholders informed\, to delivering the results successfully.\n\n  \nDecember 9\, 6:00 p.m. ET – Aligning Programs and Projects to Strategy \nDr. John Corso\, President at Strategent Corporation; Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies \n\nPrograms and their subordinate projects\, especially if they are transformational in character\, directly support the accomplishment of organizational strategy in crucial ways. Program/project managers must access the strategic management process to ensure their work aligns with the strategic objectives their work supports.\n\n  \nDecember 16\, 12:00 p.m. ET – Best practices in strategic alignment and benefits realization management in a transformation portfolio \nDr. George Moschoglou\, Associate Professor of Practice and Faculty Director at Georgetown University \nDaniel McCombe\, Head of Finance – Services & Transformation at Airbus \n\nThe lecture will cover best practices on how to align your transformation initiatives to the organization’s strategic goals and objectives (strategic alignment)\, how to translate business strategy drivers into expected benefits and evaluate the benefits achieved against original baselines (benefits realization and value management)\, and how to compose an optimal transformation portfolio to realize expected benefits under organizational constraints (portfolio identification and prioritization).\n\n  \nDecember 16\, 6:00 p.m. ET – Project Management @ Airbus Finance Transformation Office \nFranklin Ortiz\, Finance & Transformation Manager at Airbus \n\nLearn how to manage your organization’s top projects by applying project management principles and developing a strategy to help you gain leadership buy-in.

SUMMARY:Dissertation Defense: Sarah Roth
DESCRIPTION:Candidate Name Sarah Roth \nMajor: Tumor Biology \nAdvisor: Anton Wellstein\, M.D./Ph.D. \nTitle: Epigenetic Modifications: Indicators of Tissue-Specific Damage and Therapeutic Targets in Cancer \nCancer is a disease involving changes in the genome and abnormal\, uncontrolled growth of tissue. The hallmarks of cancer include evading apoptosis\, insensitivity to anti-growth signals\, sustained angiogenesis\, limitless replicative potential and tissue invasion and metastasis. Epigenetic factors such as DNA methylation\, histone modifications\, nucleosome remodeling\, and RNA regulation contribute to normal cell development but also play a crucial role in cancer development when the normal control mechanisms go awry. Here we will use DNA methylation and histone modification to study cancer as a disease. \nWhen focusing on DNA methylation\, our aim was to detect tissue-specific adverse events of thoracic radiation therapy in combination with chemotherapy by using changes in circulating\, methylated cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in patient serum collected during treatment. We will discuss the potential value and further development needed to use methylated cfDNA biomarkers as a basis to access organ specific adverse events during cancer treatment. \nHistone modifications are druggable targets that modulate gene regulation. We evaluate how response to experimental treatments such as a HDAC (histone deacetylase) class IIa inhibitor may impact immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy in a pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma model. We also investigate how this affects cancer cell subpopulations in this heterogeneous tumor model. \nOverall\, epigenetic cell-type specific regulation reflected in DNA methylation was evaluated to detect tissue-specific damage during treatment using cfDNA. Targeting an epigenetic modification using an HDAC inhibitor was studied for its impact on tumor growth\, heterogeneity and immunotherapy response. We view epigenetic factors as an opportunity and common theme to advance cancer research and therapy; with the goal of understanding the complexities in this disease.

SUMMARY:Dean's Seminar Series featuring Juanita Merchant\, MD\, PhD - "Reductionist Strategy for H. pylori-induced Gastric Cancer Surveillance using Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells"
DESCRIPTION:CME/CE Credit Offered through MedStar\n  \nSpeaker: \nJuanita Merchant\, MD\, PhD\nChief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology\nProfessor of Medicine\nUniversity of Arizona Tucson \nTitle: \nReductionist Strategy for H. pylori-induced Gastric Cancer Surveillance using Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells \nAbstract: \nWe recently reported that myeloid-derived suppressor cells or MDSCs appear in the mouse stomach in response to chronic Helicobacter infection but before the stomach develops metaplasia\, precursor lesion of gastric cancer. Therefore we hypothesized that the presence of a subset of MDSCs\, which express the myeloid differentiation factor called Schlafen4 (mice) or Schlafen12L (humans) could be used as a biomarker to identify which patients are more likely to progress to cancer and will require increased endoscopic surveillance. The expression of Schlafens (SLFNs) in myeloid cells requires Hedgehog signaling. Accordingly\, the MDSCs recruited to the stomach during a Helicobacter infection were found to acquire their T cell suppressor function only when Hedgehog competent myeloid cells were in the presence of DAMP signals\, e.g.\, type 1 interferon IFNa. Using transcriptome analysis of the SLFN+-MDSCs\, we identified a microRNA called MIR130b that can be used to non-invasively screen subjects for the complications of H. pylori infection\, e.g.\, metaplasia\, dysplasia and gastric cancer. Indeed\, our retrospective analyses in two H. pylori-infected patient populations showed elevated levels of MIR130b in the serum of patients exhibiting either intestinal metaplastic or gastric cancer. \nAccreditation \nIn support of improving patient care\, this activity has been planned and implemented by MedStar Health and Georgetown University Medical Center. MedStar Health is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME)\, the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)\, and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. \nCredit Designation \nMedStar Health designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

SUMMARY:Sacred Capital: Reflections on Religion and Power in World Politics
DESCRIPTION:Research on religion and global affairs has grown exponentially over the past decades. Earlier literature contributed to revisiting secular assumptions\, suggesting that religion mattered more than ever in the modern world. A second wave of scholarship would focus more specifically on how religion intersected with particular issues in world politics\, ranging from violence\, nationalism\, and peace to development\, human rights\, or foreign policy. The thorny relationship between religion and power\, a central concept of the social and political sciences\, appears to have been neglected. \nIn this conversation\, Dr. Gregorio Bettiza\, associate professor of international relations at the University of Exeter\, will reflect on why the issue of power should be more central to our analysis of religion and world politics. He will also talk with Geopolitics of Religious Soft Power Director Peter Mandaville about the seminal contributions the project is making in this respect; how the concept of sacred capital – outlined in Bettiza’s policy brief “States\, Religions\, and Power: Highlighting the Role of Sacred Capital in World Politics”– can broaden our understanding of the relationship between religion and power; and how religion is deeply entangled with some of the monumental international changes of our times\, from the rise of populism and the emergence of a multipolar and multicultural world to the crisis of globalization and the liberal order. \nThe Zoom Webinar link and instructions will be sent out on the morning of the event to anyone who has filled out the RSVP form. \nThis event will be recorded and a captioned video will be posted to the event page after the event date. Please RSVP to receive an email notification once it is posted.
