INSTRUCTORS:
Neo Futurists
The New York Neo-Futurists are a radically dynamic ensemble of multidisciplinary artists who write and perform original work rooted in the truth of their own lived experiences. They fuse elements of poetry, game, and performance art to create ever-changing theater and other artistic experiments to respond to the world around them. Since opening in Brooklyn in 2004, the New York Neo-Futurists have premiered over 6,000 plays and have become a downtown New York institution. In addition to performing The Infinite Wrench fifty weeks a year and producing Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind from 2004 until 2016, the New York Neo-Futurists have been a stalwart presence in the Off-Off Broadway community, having won numerous Innovative Theatre Awards and Drama Desk nominations. The company was honored at the 2018 Fresh Fruit Festival Awards with the Honeyberry Award for Unrecognized Service to the LGBT Community. The Infinite Wrench unleashes a barrage of two-minute plays, and while each one offers something different, be it funny, profound, elegant, disgusting, topical, irrelevant, or terrifying, all are truthful and tackle the here-and-now, inspired by the lived experiences of the performers.
Amelia Acosta Powell (she/her) is the Impact Producer at the Actors Theatre of Louisville. Previously she has been honored to serve as Associate Artistic Director at the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Line Producer at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and Artistic Associate & Casting Director at Arena Stage. Most recent directing work includes Every Brilliant Thing, The Gradient world premiere and The Thanksgiving Play (nominated for Outstanding Director of a Comedy, St. Louis Theatre Circle Awards). She is a steering committee member of the Latinx Theatre Commons, a member of the Casting Society of America, an inaugural grantee of TCG’s Rising Leaders of Color, and a proud alumna of the Allen Lee Hughes Fellowship. Her teaching credits include serving as adjunct faculty at Webster University Conservatory of Theatre Arts. She is originally from Denver and holds her bachelor’s and her master’s degrees from Georgetown University.
Toby Clark
Tobin D. Clark is the Technical Advisor at Georgetown University and has been in the Department of Performing Arts for 15 years. He is a theatrical designer whose work has been seen at Georgetown University, The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, The National Museum of the American Indian, DC Fringe Festival and all over Juneau, Alaska. When not at Georgetown he is a grillmaster, brewmaster and hack golfer.
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Neo-Futurist Workshop
In this 3-hour workshop, The New York Neo-Futurists will introduce participants to the fundamentals of the Neo-Futurist aesthetic: performing as your authentic self, dismantling the fourth wall, creating task-based theatre, and how to eliminate writer’s block. By the end of this workshop, participants will have written, performed and workshopped both individual and collectively written short plays.
Scene Shop Certification
Come get an introduction to the Davis Center Scene Shop. Learn the basic tool use and construction techniques. Become certified so that you can safely work in the scene shop. This is a great workshop for new students who might be interested in technical theater and returning students who just want to get reacquainted with the shop and safety. If you are a scene shop employee, come be part of this workshop and meet new people.
Intro to Theatrical Design
Do you have to read the play to be a theatrical designer? We will answer this and many more questions about design. Georgetown is a great safe space to try new things and designing for theater is open for everyone, this workshop will demystify the process and help you understand what is important and what isn’t. We will talk generally about all areas of design Scenery, Costumes, Projections, Sound, Lighting and even Props.
Lighting 101
Co-curricular theater is changing this year. By the end of the semester we will have brand new LED color changing lights as our primary fixture in both Poulton and Village C Theaters. This workshop will delve into how design concepts change when you have color changing lights. We will talk about storytelling with light and how to use texture and color to support the product. The second part of this workshop will address (pun intended) the best practices for getting a light plot hung and cabled in a world of LED fixtures. We will learn about how these new lights will change the world of being a Master Electrician. This workshop is for everyone who is interested in any part of theatrical lighting.
Technical Direction
Anyone can be a Technical Director, you don’t need to have a lot of construction or tool experience. What do you need? This workshop will address that question and give you tips and strategies to be a successful TD. You would be surprised to learn that most TDs have never done what they do when they become a TD – they essentially learn everything on the job. This workshop will walk through some of the basics and what is required of a TD as well as address the myths that exist around this position. Come be part of reinventing the world of a TD so it is more sustainable and fun.
Audition Best Practices Intro Workshop
This 90-minute session will cover the basics of professional auditions both in-person and virtually, including headshots and resumes, material selection, presentation, communication with casting personnel, common mistakes, and plenty of time for question and answer.
Audition Workshop
For this in-depth session, participants should come prepared with audition material that they wish to workshop in a simulated audition scenario.
