Title:
The Intersection of Race and Medicine; recalibrating the obvious
Abstract:
The history of race in medicine revisits a past scarred by slavery, segregation and discrimination. These experiences led to marginalization of the communities occupied by under-represented minorities, subsequent vulnerability to disproportionate disease burden, and a legion of race-based health care disparities as egregiously highlighted by COVID19. Moreover, the resultant structural barriers, (systemic racism), created restricted pathways to careers in science and medicine thus impeding a workforce vested in the care of minoritized individuals. Today’s calls for Social Justice encompasses the need to recalibrate the intersection of race and medicine. Expunging structural racism in Medicine, identifying effective strategies addressing the pipeline for early career under-represented minorities, accomplishing culture change and achieving health equity are among our most pressing issues in today’s medicine.
