About the Speaker:
Dr. Robert Schwabe is currently a Professor of Medicine in the Departments of Medicine and the Institute of Human Nutrition at Columbia University and the director of the Columbia University Digestive and Liver Disease Center. Dr. Schwabe studied Medicine at the Universities of Heidelberg and Munich, Germany, and completed a doctoral thesis in Immunology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich. After residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Heidelberg, and a postdoctoral fellowship in David Brenner’s laboratory at UNC Chapel Hill for a postdoctoral fellowship, Robert moved to Columbia in 2003. Robert’s research investigates links between hepatic inflammation, fibrosis and liver cancer and seeks to develop novel therapies for liver cancer. He has published over 100 peer reviewed papers in leading journals such as Nature, Nature Medicine, Cancer Cell, Cell Metabolism, JCI and Gastroenterology including seminal papers on the link between the microbiome, liver cancer and fibrosis as well as the fate of myofibroblasts in liver fibrosis. Robert has served as Associate Editor for Gastroenterology and the Journal of Hepatology and is on the Editorial Boards of Hepatology and Gut. He has been the recipient of many awards including fellowships from the American liver foundation, AGA, AASLD and the Harold and Golden Lamport award. Robert is currently the PI or multi-PI of multiple R01 grants from NCI and NIDDK.
