CCAS presents this virtual discussion with Georgetown SFS alum and Arab Studies Certificate student, Andrew Farrand and special guest Ouarda Benlakhlef, one of the Andi Hulm participants to talk about her experience with the show.
“Andi Hulm” (“I Have A Dream” in Arabic) is a reality competition show released in 2020 sponsored by the U.S. Embassy and the American Chamber of Commerce in Algeria. On the show, young entrepreneurs completed challenges hosted and judged by leading American and Algerian business owners, competing to win startup funding and opportunities for their business ideas.
Andrew Farrand hosted the show and worked closely with the U.S. Embassy and the Algerian participants. Farrand will talk about the goals behind producing the show, the situation of young people in Algeria, using business to foster international diplomacy, and how the show fits into the larger political situation in Algeria over the last year.
Andrew Farrand lived in Algeria from 2013 to 2020 and served as host of “Andi Hulm”, Algeria’s first entrepreneurship reality television program. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Andrew graduated in 2007 from Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service with an Arab Studies Certificate. While at Georgetown, he studied abroad in Syria and Jordan and supported Dr. Rochelle Davis and other CCAS staff as a research assistant. During his years in Algeria, he oversaw implementation of programs for two US-based non-profit organizations, the National Democratic Institute and World Learning, and consulted for Oxford Business Group and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy. Proficient in French and Algerian Arabic, Andrew is the translator of Inside the Battle of Algiers (Just World Books, 2017) by Algerian liberation hero Zohra Drif Bitat. He has contributed to several guidebooks and published numerous articles on Algeria, and his book The Algerian Dream will be released in December 2020. He blogs at www.ibnibnbattuta.com.
