2011 GUMC Commencement
A total of 194 students from the Georgetown University School of Medicine (GUMC) received their medical degrees Sunday in a commencement ceremony at DAR Constitution Hall.
Barbara Alving (M’72), director at NIH’s National Center for Research Resources, served as the Class of 2011’s keynote speaker.
"The medical degree can be considered as your official passport that gives you permission and the responsibility to connect at the most profound levels with individuals who as patients, reveal their fears and hopes in confronting illnesses," she told the students. "This official passport is very special – it allows you to go from the individual patient to the halls of Congress, as well as to the poorest communities both in this country and throughout the world."
