Video: Prof. John Voll Discusses Immediate Obstacles Facing South Sudan
John Voll, professor of Islamic history and associate director of the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, explores the problems facing an independent South Sudan. On Jan. 9, voters in South Sudan overwhelmingly elected to separate from the North Sudan, effective July 2011. Rebuilding and expanding infrastructure is imperative for the new government of South Sudan, he says, especially with the return of many southerners currently living in the north. Voll also says reducing intragroup warfare will be an issue faced by the new government because South Sudan is not currently a cultural or political unit.
