Professor Leads Group Focused on Cancer Prevention
March 21, 2011 – Dr. Peter Shields, deputy director of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, has begun a two-year term as president of the American Society of Preventive Oncology (ASPO).
The professor of oncology and medicine is a leading expert in biomarkers of cancer risk and tobacco harm reduction strategies.
“There are remarkable advances in understanding the causes of cancer and what we can do to prevent it and also make the lives better for people with cancer,” says Shields. “Members are driving this process, and APSO provides the platform to make this happen.”
ASPO is a multidisciplinary society whose mission is to promote cancer prevention and control research.
“We have been increasing our activities on the training and mentoring of scientists and science leaders, and these have been paying off,” he says.
