GU, Australian University Sign Nursing Study-Abroad Agreement

NHS-ACU Signing

Georgetown School of Nursing & Health Studies Dean Martin Y. Iguchi, left, and Australian Catholic University Vice Chancellor Greg Craven sign a study-abroad agreement allowing nursing students from both universities to study at each other's campuses starting in 2012.

November 15, 2011 – A new agreement between Georgetown and Australian Catholic University (ACU) will allow nursing students at both universities to study on each other’s campuses.

School of Nursing & Health Studies Dean Martin Y. Iguchi and ACU Vice Chancellor Greg Craven signed the agreement yesterday at a special reception in St. Mary’s Hall.

“We’re very pleased to be able to join you in this agreement,” Iguchi said.  “Our students consider [study abroad] transformative. It is something that is very important to us.”

Common Assumptions

Craven noted that ACU includes six campuses around Australia with approximately 25,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

The nursing program is situated among ACU’s Faculty of Health Sciences and is the largest supplier of nurses in Australia.

The vice chancellor noted the similarities in the missions of both universities.

“One of the things that is so obvious is the correlation between things like social justice and the dignity of the human person,” Craven said. “We have common assumptions. If you have common assumptions and different applications, that seems to provide the most fruitful possibilities for collaboration.”

Future Opportunities

The new program begins in spring 2012, when Georgetown’s nursing majors will travel to ACU. In fall 2012, nursing students from ACU will study at Georgetown.

Katherine Bellows, executive director of international programs at Georgetown, helped organize the signing.

“We thank you all for the efforts that you put into creating this agreement,” she said.  “We look forward to developing it … in the years to come.”
