DR. MARAL KIBARIAN SKELSEY

April 19, 2011 – The Food and Drug Administration has appointed Dr. Maral Kibarian Skelsey, director of dermatologic surgery at the Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC), to its committee for medical devices and radiological health.

“This committee oversees regulations for tanning beds and other medical devices, which will likely impact the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of skin cancer,” Skelsey says. “I’m very pleased to participate in this important work.”

Skelsey, a board-certified skin cancer specialist, serves as an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the School of Medicine. She also performs Mohs micrographic surgery, which is one of the most effective procedures for skin cancer.

The GUMC professor conducts ongoing research related to skin cancer, and her recent studies have focused on the levels of Vitamin D present in patients with nonmelanoma skin cancer.
