October 28, 2011 – Georgetown’s iconic buildings were illuminated at twilight as members of the university community celebrated the launch of “For Generations to Come: The Campaign for Georgetown.”
Alonzo Mourning (C’92) excited the large crowd and introduced President John J. DeGioia.
“Each one of us, the moment we stepped on this campus, became members of a community and heirs to a tradition of excellence and service,” said DeGioia, who stood on the steps of historic Healy Hall surrounded by students, alumni, faculty and university leaders. “Today, we acknowledge what this place means to us … and the role we are asked to play in opening new doors for future generations of the Georgetown family.”
The campaign will raise funds for scholarships, faculty recruitment, research and innovation and other priorities to ensure that the university continues its long tradition of excellence and impact in the world.
Michael Meaney, president of the Georgetown University Student Association, closed the event with a toast before the celebration continued on Healy lawn.
“We raise our glasses to the spirit of Georgetown,” he said, “today and forever.”
