Rev. Kevin F. O'Brien, S.J., Appointed as Vice President for Mission and Ministry
August 25, 2011
Dear Members of the Georgetown University Community:
With great pleasure, I write to announce that Rev. Kevin F. O’Brien, S.J. (C’88) has agreed to serve as Vice President for Mission and Ministry. Since 2008, Fr. O’Brien has served our community as Executive Director of Campus Ministry, and I am deeply grateful that he has agreed to take on this important new role.
Founded in 2003, the Office of Mission and Ministry is committed to promoting the Catholic and Jesuit identity of the University and the values we espouse. In the Jesuit tradition, the Office of Mission and Ministry is also dedicated to advancing interreligious understanding in our community, and the work of the Office is carried out with a deep respect for the plurality of traditions which are held by members of our community. Fr. O’Brien will oversee the Office in its work to implement a variety of mission-focused programs, seminars, days of recollection, retreats and reflection series which both promote the Catholic and Jesuit character of Georgetown and serve the diverse religious needs of all members of our community. He will also coordinate programs that contribute to the formation of lay colleagues in the Jesuit tradition.
As Executive Director of Campus Ministry, Fr. O’Brien has overseen the ministry programs of a number of faith traditions on our three campuses and provided valuable guidance to our students, faculty and staff. He also serves as the Jesuit-in-Residence in Copley Hall, and he coordinated spring break service immersion trips to El Salvador in 2010 and the Arizona/Mexico border in 2011.
Before returning to Georgetown, Fr. O’Brien served as Associate Pastor at Holy Trinity Church in Washington, D.C. Fr. O’Brien has also taught philosophy and ethics at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia and assisted in the Office of University Mission and Ministry at Fordham University. He has had extensive experience in both University and community ministry and is a published scholar and lecturer in our Department of Theology. Fr. O’Brien holds a J.D. from the University of Florida, an M.A. in Philosophy from Fordham University, and a Masters of Divinity and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Weston Jesuit School of Theology.
I am sincerely grateful to Rev. Philip Boroughs, S.J. for his service and leadership as Vice President for Mission and Ministry since 2003. I look forward to continuing this important work with Fr. O’Brien as we carry out our mission in the Catholic and Jesuit tradition.
You have my very best wishes.
John J. DeGioia
