Acclaimed Playwright to Join Georgetown’s Theater Faculty
May 10, 2012 – Playwright Christine Evans, who holds the prestigious Briggs-Copeland Lecturer position at Harvard, will join Georgetown’s Theater and Performance Studies Program.
“I'm thrilled to be coming to Georgetown,” says Evans, who as an assistant professor at Georgetown this fall will teach two courses – Play Analysis and Real Things Onstage: Theaters of War and Witness. “The university’s international character, reputation for excellence and concern for social justice speak deeply to me.”
Evans is best known for her plays about war and its aftermath. At Harvard since 2007, she has initiated, coordinated and directed the now-annual Harvard Playwrights Festival.
Evans holds an M.F.A. in playwriting and a Ph.D. in theatre and performance studies from Brown University. Originally from Australia, her plays have been internationally produced and called “hauntingly poetic” by the Sydney Morning Herald.
NoPassport Press this year will publish Evans’ forthcoming anthology War Plays, which includes Trojan Barbie, Mothergun and Slow Falling Bird.

Trojan Barbie will be presented at Georgetown in April 2013 as part of the Theater and Performance Studies Program’s 2012-2013 season at the Davis Performing Arts Center.
Evans has described the play to the Boston Globe as “a modern car-crash encounter with Euripides’ Trojan Women.
The work won the Jane Chambers Playwriting Award in 2007 and had its world premiere at the American Repertory Theater in 2009.

Roth, director of Georgetown’s Theater and Performance Studies Program. “She rose in a highly competitive national search thanks to her depth and range of teaching, her exceptional creative research trajectory, her strong scholarly profile, her match with core values in our program and her international as well as interdisciplinary reach.”
In November 2010, the program presented a workshop of Evans’ interactive-media theatre work-in-progress The Underpass, now titled You Are Dead. You Are Here.
The play is now in development toward full production in 2012-13 through HERE Arts Center (NYC) Resident Artists program.
The work is based on the use of virtual reality environments to train soldiers for battle and to rehabilitate those suffering from PTSD. The effort involved Georgetown students, faculty and staff and research at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
Evan’s plays also include Weightless, My Vicious Angel and Fishbowl.
The playwright’s work has been produced and developed at the Playbox Theatre in the U.K., London’s New Vic, Sydney’s Belvoir St. Theatre, the Adelaide International Festival of the Arts and numerous other venues.
“I'm excited to bring my own interests in new writing for the stage, cross-media work and contemporary political theatre to the mix, and am eager to contribute to the rich and growing partnerships with local and international theatres and communities,” Evans says of the Georgetown position.
Among many honors, Evans has received the Australia Council for the Arts New Work Award, a Rockefeller Bellagio Center Fellowship, two MacDowell Colony Fellowships, the 2009 Playwrights Theatre “Plays for the 21st Century” Award and the Perishable Theatre’s Women’s Playwriting Award (2000 and 2001).
Multitalented, Evans is a saxophonist who earlier in her career also performed as an acrobat in an Australian women’s circus.
“Hiring Christine is a coup for Georgetown — and for Washington, D.C.,” Roth says.
