University Community Commemorates Veterans Day

November 12, 2013 — The university commemorated Veterans Day yesterday with programs honoring students, faculty and staff who served in the United States military.

The Georgetown University Student Veterans Association and Georgetown’s ROTC, The Hoya Battalion, sponsored the “A Day to Honor Our Veterans” ceremony that took place in front of White-Gravenor Hall on Copley Lawn.

Georgetown President John J. DeGioia and retired Maj. Gen. Robert Scales presented remarks during the ceremony.

The Law Center also hosted a program and reception to honor service members and yellow ribbon supporters at its Gerwirz Student Center.

Part of the Post-9/11 GI Bill, the Yellow Ribbon program covers tuition for veterans for up to four academic years.

Speakers included Louis Freeh, former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); Maj. Gen. Steven Joseph Lepper (L’91), deputy judge advocate general in the United States Air Force; and retired Lt. Brandon Stone (L’15), former United States Navy SEAL.
