PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Georgetown field hockey senior captain Kristen Volpe was named to the BIG EAST Field Hockey second team, when the conference announced its awards during the 2009 field hockey awards banquet held in conjunction with the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship to be played this weekend. Volpe becomes the first Hoya to earn post-season BIG EAST honors.
Georgetown used a spirited comeback and took a 21-20 lead on a 68-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Scott Darby (Tewksbury, Mass./St. John's Prep) with 54 seconds left in the game, but Marist used a 37-yard field goal from Jason Myers with five seconds left to beat the Hoyas, 23-21, in front of 3,000 fans at Leonidoff Field on a crisp, sunny afternoon.
This week the Georgetown University swimming & diving program witnessed the primary goal of a three-and-a-half-year campaign coming to fruition as a state-of-the-art scoreboard was mounted on the wall of the Albert G. McCarthy, Jr. Swimming Pool An effort of alumni, family and friends of the swimming & diving program, the scoreboard will enable the Hoyas to host meets against national competition when the dual-meet season continues in January. The LED matrix-display scoreboard will allow animation, graphics, logos and competitor's names to be displayed along with their times.
