Jerome

On the iconography of Jerome and his lion, see E. Rice, Saint Jerome in the Renaissance (Baltimore 1985) 37-45. The painting reproduced here has been argued to be a flattering portrait of the contemporary cardinal Nicholas of Cusa as well. The contemporary evolution of the image's implications may be studied through poems by Randall Jarrell, Margaret Moore, and Stephen Mitchell.

Durer's version

A substantial selection of Jerome's works in English translation from the series Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers is now available on the net.
