INTRODUCTION
This site is an attempt to outline several technology
lessons that will be used in a five-week composition course for high school
students here at Georgetown University. My belief is that by integrating
technology into the daily reading and writing activities of the English
classroom, we will be able to draw students' attention to specific aspects
of the writing process (including critical readings, prewriting activities,
collaboration, and revision) and engage students in higher levels of self-reflection
and metacognition.
The lessons are divided into three sections.
Each begins with some general introductory material, either with regard
to the techology being used or the content material being studied (there
are also several links to relevant content or technology materials on the
web). Second, each lesson contains a set-by-step explanation of the activities
for the day. These are not intended as training sessions for computer programs
such as CommonSpace and StorySpace, but provide suggestions for how these
programs might be used within a larger educational context. Finally, each
lesson concludes with a theoretical rationale. The lessons are designed
for ninety-minute class periods, but could easily be adapted for shorter
or longer amounts of time.
