Messages to the Georgetown Community
Announcing the Appointment of Fr. Philip Boroughs, SJ as the 32th President of Holy Cross College
May 7, 2011
It is with great appreciation for his dedication to Georgetown that I write to inform you that earlier today the Trustees of the College of the Holy Cross named Rev. Philip Boroughs, S.J., Georgetown University’s Vice President of the Office of Mission and Ministry, to be its 32nd President, effective January 2012.
Appointed in 2003 as the first Vice President of Mission and Ministry, Fr. Boroughs has developed and implemented a variety of programs which promote the Catholic and Jesuit character of Georgetown with faculty, staff, students, alumni and a number of University Boards. Fr. Boroughs coordinates a number of programs that contribute to the formation of lay colleagues in the Jesuit tradition, including the Nineteenth Annotation Retreat Program for faculty and staff, the Ignatian Tradition Seminar for administrators and the Ignatius Careism Seminar. He also co-sponsors the Kenya Immersion Experience for faculty and senior administrators with the Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching and Service. Through his leadership, creativity and pastoral care, he has developed over eight years a community of Jesuits and lay colleagues who will be able to maintain and advance the Catholic and Jesuit mission of the University well into the future.
I am sincerely grateful for the many ways that Fr. Boroughs has supported the University and partnered with me in carrying out our mission in the Catholic and Jesuit tradition. I look forward to celebrating Fr. Boroughs and his many contributions to Georgetown in the months ahead. Please join me in congratulating him as he takes this next step in his distinguished career.
