Announcing the Appointment of Dr. William M. Treanor as the new EVP and Dean of the Law School
June 29, 2010
Dear Members of the Georgetown University Community:
It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of our new Executive Vice President and Dean of the Georgetown University Law Center, William M. Treanor, effective August 16. Dean Treanor joins our community from Fordham University, where he has served as Dean of Fordham Law School since 2002.
Dean Treanor has had a rich and varied legal career working in both higher education and government. He has been on the faculty of Fordham Law since 1991, serving as Associate Professor and then Professor before being named Dean. During his tenure, Dean Treanor worked to enhance the academic reputation of Fordham Law by strengthening the school's clinical program and its global focus. Dean Treanor promoted a strong sense of community and a commitment to the Jesuit tradition of education and service to others at Fordham Law, and he worked to increase students' quality of life.
From 1998-2001, Dean Treanor served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel, responsible for supplying advice to the White House and Attorney General. Before coming to Fordham, he served as a government attorney, and was associate independent counsel during the Iran/Contra investigation. Dean Treanor is also a renowned legal scholar with a focus in constitutional law. Since 2006, he has served as the Paul Fuller Professor of Law at Fordham.
Dean Treanor earned his B.A. and J.D. from Yale University, and this spring he completed a Ph.D. in History at Harvard University.
I wish to express my deep appreciation to Dean Emerita Judith Areen for her leadership of the Law Center during this period of transition. I am also grateful to Patricia King, Carmack Waterhouse Professor of Law, Medicine, Ethics, and Public Policy, and the entire search committee for their dedication in conducting a comprehensive, nationwide search for the new leader of our Law Center.
Please join me in welcoming Dean Treanor to Georgetown. I very much look forward to working together and to his dynamic leadership of our Law Center in the years ahead.
You have my very best wishes.
John J. DeGioia
