Remarks by President John J. DeGioia
Announcement of 17th Director of Athletics, Mr. Lee Reed
April 15, 2010
Thank you, Dan. Good morning, everyone, and thank you for being here. I am proud to announce that Lee Reed will serve as Georgetown University’s 17th Director of Athletics, effective May 10th. Lee will lead operations of the Georgetown Athletics Department, which includes 29 sports and more than 750 outstanding student-athletes.
For the past eight years, Lee has served as the Director of Athletics at Cleveland State University. I am confident that he will bring the same commitment to educational excellence and competitive success to Georgetown that made him a strong and successful leader at Cleveland State. Lee will collaborate with coaches, student-athletes, staff, faculty, alumni, and NCAA and conference leaders to create the best educational and competitive experience for our student-athletes. He will ensure that our Athletics program complies with all NCAA and conference regulations and strives to be a model of excellence and sportsmanship for all in intercollegiate athletics.
Lee’s successful tenure at Cleveland State provides many examples of his leadership and vision, including 11 Horizon League Championships and 15 NCAA Championship trips. At the conclusion of the 2007-08 academic year, the Horizon League honored Cleveland State for the first time with the James J. McCafferty Award, which recognizes the top overall athletic program in the league.
Lee is a national leader in intercollegiate athletics, having represented the Horizon League on the NCAA Management Council and as the president of the NCAA I-AAA Athletic Director’s Association in 2007-08. He is also a member of the NCAA Basketball Academic Enhancement Group, a working group composed of presidents, chancellors, head coaches, commissioners, athletic directors and faculty athletic representatives, which was established to develop strategies to enhance the academic performance and graduation rates of NCAA Division I men’s basketball.
Lee has served as chairman of the John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards committee, which is operated through the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Reed also has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. In March of 2005, he was named one of the 50 Most Powerful African-Americans in Sports by Black Enterprise magazine.
Before I introduce Lee, I want to thank Senior Vice President for Strategic Development Daniel R. Porterfield for serving as Interim Director of Athletics since last June. Dan has engaged with the strategic, operational, academic, regulatory, competitive, and philanthropic dimensions of Athletics. He also led the search process that identified Lee. I want to thank all members of the Georgetown community who took part in the search process, which included student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and senior leaders.
I look forward to working with Lee and colleagues from across the University to build upon the rich history of Georgetown Athletics. Now, it is my honor to introduce Lee Reed – the new Director of Georgetown Athletics.
