Messages to the Georgetown Community

Transitions at the Law School

December 21, 2009

Dear Colleagues:

As you know, on January 29, 2010 T. Alexander Aleinikoff will be stepping down from his position as Executive Vice President and Dean of the Law Center to become the United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees.  We remain grateful for Alex's remarkable leadership of the Law Center over the past five years.  We are deeply proud of him, and he will be truly missed here at Georgetown.

I write at this time to let you know that Judith C. Areen, Paul Regis Dean Professor of Law and Dean Emerita of the Law Center has generously accepted the role of Interim Dean of the Georgetown University Law Center effective January 30.  As you know, Judy has served on the Georgetown Law Faculty since 1972, and from 1989-2004 she served as Executive Vice President and Dean of the Law Center.  I know Judy will provide invaluable leadership during this time of transition for the Law Center, and I am deeply grateful to her for taking on this important role.  I also want to express my sincere appreciation to our law faculty who offered thoughtful and very helpful advice on this matter.  I very much look forward to working with Judy again.

I am also pleased to share with you that Patricia King, Carmack Waterhouse Professor of Law, Medicine, Ethics, and Public Policy, has agreed to chair the search committee for a new dean.  I have asked Pat to initiate the process of consultation with the Law Center faculty to allow it to identify suggested members of the search committee.  Pat will be working with Alex Aleinikoff on the logistics for that consultation. A majority of the search committee members will come from the Law Center faculty.

I hope you will join me in welcoming Judy to this role and in wishing Alex well as he takes this next step in his distinguished career.

Sincerely,

John J. DeGioia
