A Georgetown basketball player signals to the crowd

Georgetown offers students many opportunities to pursue athletics on campus. Students can compete at the intercollegiate level as well as play club or intramural sports. We also provide a variety of fitness and recreational resources and facilities for students. Inspired by the Jesuit principle of educating the whole person, Georgetown encourages students to develop their physical talents and live an active and healthy lifestyle.

Intercollegiate Athletics

Georgetown competes in Division I intercollegiate athletics with 29 varsity teams. We are a founding member of the Big East Conference and an associate member of the Patriot League.

More than 800 student-athletes compete in varsity sports at Georgetown. Most varsity teams train and compete at McDonough Gymnasium and the Multi-Sport Facility on campus. The men’s basketball team plays home games at the Verizon Center in downtown Washington, D.C.

Georgetown student-athletes strive for success in the classroom and in competition, balancing the demands of rigorous academics and Division I athletics. Coaches and athletics department staff help students develop their fullest potential and discover their leadership skills as individuals and teammates.

Student-athletes represent the Georgetown community with pride on the local and national stage, and Georgetown athletics inspires and unites the campus community, bringing together students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Club and Intramural Sports

Georgetown University offers students the opportunity to participate in a broad range of club and intramural sports, including basketball, racquetball, squash, tennis and dodge ball. Students participating in club sports compete throughout the year against teams from local colleges and universities. Intramural sports allow students to compete against friends and classmates in a recreational setting.

Campus Fitness and Recreation

Yates Field House is the campus' fitness center, which includes cardiovascular and strength-training facilities. Students can play basketball, tennis, racquetball and squash on several indoor courts. Yates also features an indoor swimming pool with a separate diving well. Students also can participate in a variety of group fitness and recreation classes at Yates.
