Language and Linguistics

We work closely with students pursuing the study of language and linguistics. Georgetown’s long tradition of fostering international understanding and study of foreign languages and cultures continues today with seven modern foreign language departments. We also have departments of English, classics, and linguistics. Our courses educate students to reach a high level of cultural and linguistic understanding, which allows them to evaluate ideas and values within a humanistic and critical context.
We also prepare them to make successful cross-cultural communication by being equipped with an engaged understanding of language. Through comparative literature, we foster the study of literary relations across national, linguistic and cultural boundaries, and examine literature in its interaction with other cultural forms.
Our graduates are sensitive to the needs of the world community, open to exploring new ways to improve life through communication and ready to approach complex issues from an intercultural perspective.
